A little further, still within reach
Avondale Heights is the western edge of the area we serve from our Pascoe Vale Road clinic. The drive out along Buckley Street is a short one, and we cover the suburb throughout the week.
Who we visit in Avondale Heights
The suburb was built out in the 1960s and 70s, and many of the families who moved in then are still there, now in their seventies and eighties. A large Italian-Australian community gives the suburb its character, and it is common for us to be contacted by a son or daughter arranging care for a parent who wants to stay in the home where the family grew up. We also visit NDIS participants and people recovering from surgery.
Hills, strength and the river
Avondale Heights is hilly, and the streets closest to the river drop steeply. That shapes the programs we build here. Leg strength and safe stair technique come first, then balance, then walking distance. Canning Reserve and the river trail below it are beautiful recovery walks once the legs are ready, and Military Road’s shops are the practical goal for people who want to manage their own errands.
After hospital
Avondale Heights residents are often discharged from the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Footscray Hospital or private hospitals in the north west. A block of home physiotherapy in the first weeks after a joint replacement, a fracture or a period of illness helps the recovery stick. We follow your surgeon’s plan and make sure the house, with its steps and slopes, is managed safely.
Podiatry at home
Nail and skin care, diabetic foot assessments, ingrown toenail care and footwear advice are available at home. On hilly streets, well-fitting shoes with good grip matter more than usual, and a footwear appraisal looks at the pairs you actually wear.
Nearby suburbs
We also visit Niddrie, Aberfeldie, Maribyrnong and Maidstone.
