Straight up Sydney Road from our clinic
Our Brunswick clinic is on Sydney Road, and so is Fawkner, so the trip is as simple as it gets even if it is a longer one than for the inner suburbs. We group Fawkner visits with Coburg and Pascoe Vale so travel time is used well, and we can usually offer a choice of times. Hadfield, on the far side of the Fawkner Memorial Park, is covered by the same team.
Who we visit in Fawkner
Fawkner was built out in the 1950s and 60s, and many of the families who moved in then are still there. The suburb has a large community of older Italian-Australian residents, joined more recently by families from Lebanon, Turkey, Pakistan and India. Staying in the family home is the goal we hear most, and it is often a son or daughter who contacts us. We welcome a family member sitting in if English is not the first language at home. We also visit NDIS participants, residents of the suburb’s aged care homes, and people recovering from surgery.
Walking and balance in Fawkner
The suburb is flat, which helps. Local reserves have level paths close to most homes, and the Merri Creek trail along the eastern edge offers longer, shaded walks. The Bonwick Street shops, Fawkner station and the Sydney Road bus routes are practical goals for people who want to manage their own errands and travel again. In Hadfield, the West Street shops serve the same purpose.
After hospital
Fawkner residents are usually treated at John Fawkner Private Hospital in Coburg, the Northern in Epping or the Royal Melbourne. A short block of home physiotherapy in the first weeks after a joint replacement, a fracture or an illness helps the discharge stick. We follow the plan your surgeon set.
Podiatry at home
Nail and skin care, diabetic foot assessments, ingrown toenail care and footwear advice are all available at home across Fawkner and Hadfield. Regular podiatry matters for the many residents here managing diabetes with their GP.
