Who we visit in Heidelberg West
The suburb was built for the athletes of the 1956 Olympic Games and then became public housing, and much of it still is. Many older residents and people living with disability live in the Olympic Village streets and the walk-ups and units across the suburb, and we visit them regularly. We are used to arranging access, working in smaller spaces, and teaching support workers and family members the program so it continues between visits. We also visit NDIS participants, people recovering from surgery, and residents of the suburb’s aged care homes.
Home after the Austin
The Austin Hospital, the Mercy and Warringal Private are minutes away in Heidelberg, and the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, with its rehabilitation wards, sits on the suburb’s own border. Many of our visits here are in the first days and weeks after discharge. We follow the hospital’s plan, make sure the home is safe, and rebuild strength and walking where they are needed.
Walking and balance in Heidelberg West
The suburb is mostly flat. Malahang Reserve and the Darebin Creek trail offer level, shaded walking, and the shops at The Mall on Bell Street and at Bellfield are practical goals for people who want to manage their own errands again.
Podiatry at home
Nail and skin care, diabetic foot assessments, ingrown toenail care and footwear advice are all available at home. Regular foot care keeps people mobile and out of hospital, which matters all the more for residents who rely on walking.
